au by KDDI is a Japanese mobile operator. The first version of emoji was released by the company on May 1, 1999, and unlike other versions of emoticons issued by competing companies, au by KDDI emoji were released in black and white.
Au by KDDI is popular for its custom emoji design. Between 1999 and 2012, 8 versions of Emoji were released.
At the moment, au by KDDI emojis have been replaced with Google emoticons.
Interesting fact: In 2012, the company completely gave up its custom emoji design. In the new version Emoji looked like NTT Docomo emoticons. Companies wanted to introduce their own version of emoticons, which they hoped could serve as a standard among Emoji and in a Unicode.
