1. Holiday history of 💖 Valentine’s Day
There are different versions of the origin of Valentine’s Day. One of them says that it originated from the ancient Roman holiday of Lupercalia. This holiday was intended to praise the goddess of 💖 Love Juno Februata and Faun the god and was celebrated every year on February 15th. The main purpose of the holiday was to increase the 🤰 Birth rate, therefore, certain rituals and offerings were carried out in honor of the gods. But this version has many inconsistencies, and scientists are inclined to another more popular hypothesis about St. Valentine.
In 269, the Roman 👑 Emperor Claudius II 🙅♂️ Forbade people to formalize relationships by marriage to attract men to participate in the ⚔️ War for Caesar. Valentine was very sympathetic to 💕 Couples in love, and since he was a priest, he secretly married them. The emperor soon found out about this and imprisoned him, and on February 14, 269, he was executed.
An additional version of this story says that Valentine ❤️ Loved the daughter of the chief of the prison and sent her a farewell 💌 Letter the day before his death. He confessed his feelings in it and signed ‘Your Valentine’. That’s how the tradition of giving valentines started.
In 496, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as Valentine’s Day. But they began to celebrate this holiday on a large scale in Western Europe in the 13th century and the USA in 1777.
