1. Holiday history of ๐ŸŽ†๐ŸŽ‰ Mardi Gras

Originally the name โ€œMardi Grasโ€ or โ€œBoeuf Grasโ€ in the Middle Ages meant the traditional killing of a ๐Ÿ‚ Bull before Lent. In 1699 Jean-Baptiste Le Moine de Bienville came to the New World and created the settlement Pointe du Mardi Gras, which was named after the medieval tradition. In 1702 the settlement was renamed Fort Louis de la Mobile, and already in 1703, the Mardi Gras festival was ๐ŸŽ‰ Celebrated there for the first time.

In 1704 a ๐Ÿคซ Secret ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Society Masque de la Mobile was created to organize festivals, but it was quickly replaced by the Boeuf Gras Society, which lasted until 1861.

The main symbol of Mardi Gras at that time was a statue of a white ๐Ÿ‚ Bull or its head, which was installed on a moving platform. Gradually, the festival began to acquire new traditions: balls, thematic communities, processions in carnival costumes, etc. According to legend, the main modern tradition of the holiday originated in 1872 thanks to Prince Alexei Alexandrovich Romanov, who went to ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ America for his beloved ๐ŸŽญ Actress Lydia Thompson. Upon learning of his arrival, the organizers of the carnival made a special platform on which Rex, ๐Ÿ‘‘ King, was written.

Thus, Prince Romanov became the king of the holiday, thereby establishing the main tradition of the carnival. Since then, the king and the ๐Ÿ‘ธ Queen have been considered the main persons at the carnival. Throughout the holiday, they drive along the main street of the city on a large platform with their โ€œsubjectsโ€.

Interesting fact: In the 18th century, New Orleans in Louisiana was owned by the ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French, who created this carnival. The ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spaniards, who replaced the French, โ›” Banned the celebration, but the residents of the city insisted on its return.

2. Traditions and Symbols of ๐ŸŽ†๐ŸŽ‰ Mardi Gras

Traditionally, the ๐Ÿ‘‘ King and the ๐Ÿ‘ธ Queen of the carnival not only ride on their platform but in response to the crowdโ€™s cries of โ€œThrow us somethingโ€, they throw tin ๐Ÿช™ Coins, plastic ๐Ÿ“ฟ Beads, and other trifles at it.

Since ancient times, the most valuable thing that a person from the crowd could get was ๐Ÿฅฅ Coconut, but it was not so easy to earn it. To attract the attention of His Highnesses, people raised their sweatshirts and exposed themselves. Now the coconut is replaced with beads or ๐Ÿงธ Toys.

Traditionally, on this day it is customary to treat each other with flour products: pies, ๐Ÿฉ Donuts, and rolls with ๐Ÿฎ Cream. Also, a must-have treat is ๐Ÿฅง Three Kings Pie. It looks like a ๐Ÿฅจ Pretzel that contains cinnamon. According to beliefs, such a cake was brought as a gift from the Magi to the newborn Jesus. Therefore, a small figure of him is put inside the dough, and the one who gets it will have to treat ๐Ÿค Friends with a festive dinner in a year.

The traditional symbols of the carnival are ๐Ÿฆนโ€โ™€๏ธ Masks and clothing in ๐ŸŸก Yellow, ๐ŸŸข Green, and ๐ŸŸฃ Purple colors, which symbolize ๐Ÿ™ Faith, strength, and ๐Ÿฆธ Justice.
