The holiday was adopted during the World Health ⚕️ Assembly in 🐝 May 2005. The world resolution WHA58.13 was signed, supporting free donation and setting the official date for the celebration, June 14.
The date of the celebration was not chosen by chance. It is associated with the birthday of the Austrian 👨⚕️ Immunologist Karl Landsteiner, who became the Nobel laureate for the discovery of 🆎 Human blood types.
Interesting fact: James Harrison is an Australian 🩸 Blood donor with 18 years of experience. His blood contains 🧬 Cells that prevent the development of anti-rhesus antibodies in a 🤰 Pregnant woman’s body. More than 2 million 👶 Newborns were saved thanks to him. He performed the donation procedure more than 1100 times and donated 560 liters of biomaterial.
