◯‍◯‍◯‍◯‍◯ Olympic rings

Meaning of ◯‍◯‍◯‍◯‍◯ Olympic rings

In July 2016, WhatsApp messenger released version 2.16.7, in which it introduced a colored ring logo dedicated to the start of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. On Android and the web, the emoji was in the emoji panel in the sports section next to 🎳 Pins and bowling balls. On iOS, the emblem appeared after copying the set of five characters ◯◯◯◯◯.

The temporary emoji ◯‍◯‍◯‍◯‍◯ Olympic rings copies the emblem of the International Olympic Games, held every 4 years in one of the world countries. The original logo is depicted on the white flag and is one of the main symbols of the competition.

A sequence of five identical ⚪ Circles belonging to the Geometric Shapes Unicode block was used to create the emoji in the form of Olympic symbols. The elements of the combination are interconnected by another character – the Zero Width Joiner (ZWJ), approved as part of Unicode in 1993 and added to emoji in 2018.

The ZWJ symbol doesn’t have its own appearance and is used to create new characters from several independent emoji. The daisy chain resulted in a combination that is displayed on a supported device as a single emoji in the form of the original Olympic emblem.

In August 2016, the messenger removed emoji in version 2.16.9. During its existence and up to the present, the element hasn’t been supported anywhere else, and Unicode hasn’t made the sequence part of the system. The Unicode Organization didn’t recommend this emoji for general exchange.

The history of the symbol creation

The emblem of the Olympic Games was designed in 1913 by the founder of the Games, Pierre de Coubertin. The logo consists of five intertwined colored rings and, according to the author’s idea, embodies the unity of the peoples of five continents. It is also understood that the combination of shades includes the national colors of all countries of the world.

Interesting Fact: The version of WhatsApp where the sequence of ◯◯◯◯◯ Olympic rings is displayed in color isn’t the only one. The five shades of the symbol are also introduced by the emoji provider Emojidex in August 2017 in version 1.0.34. But on the screen, the element is displayed not as 5 rings, but like a blossoming flower. +add
